Evaluation of factors related to the decline of Darwin's rhea in Patagonia, Argentina // Argentina

The wildlife of Patagonia is extremely rich and is home for a variety of species that have disappeared elsewhere. These species are in a critical situation due to intensive poaching from the oil exploration, habitat destruction and fragmentation, the impact of introduced species, predation altered by human activities, and drier environmental conditions. One of these in danger species is the Darwin's rhea, a large and flightless ostrich looking bird. The Darwin's rhea populations have declined dramatically during the last century. Currently during times of drought, many Darwin's rheas are found dead, indicating that they do not do well under conditions drier than average.
